“They’re still out there?”

Craig. Couldn’t the guy let him get a little rest?

He forced his eyes open and pushed a little straighter on the couch.

“They’ve been out there since Monday morning. This is Wednesday.”

“Yeah. Nothing I can do about them.” He couldn’t do much about anything, yet that probably hadn’t been the best answer to give Craig. “Except ignore them. They haven’t done anything but watch.” Which was bad enough.

Craig wandered to the fireplace and braced his hand against the mantle. “What’s your plan?”

“Besides waiting for them to leave? But I don’t think they’re going to anytime soon. I saw them change shifts early this morning, at least out front. Two more SUVs drove up and took their places.”

Craig ran the back of his hand over his mouth. “I don’t understand it. What are they doing here? It’s not like they see us doing anything.”

He tipped his head against the couch. “Beats me. Making sure we don’t leave? Watching us for some reason? Waiting for something? I don’t know.”

Craig lowered his head. “They’re here because of me. And it’s somehow related to that call.”

What did he say to that? “Could be. But we can’t do anything about it until we’ve got all the facts.”

Craig lifted his head and raked his hand through his hair. “I don’t know how you stand talking to me, much less having me live here.”

Great. “No need to bring it up again.”

“I can’t forget it.” Craig’s face reddened. “I can’t forget how much of a coward I was.”

With the scant amount of sleep he’d gotten last night, this couldn’t go well. “Dude, you sinned. You asked God to forgive you, and He did.” He took a slow breath, and black spots drifted through the room. “If you want my advice, grab that Bible laying on the coffee table, read for a while, then pray. Sitting around focusing on everything you’ve done wrong doesn’t help anything.”

Harsh maybe, but he didn’t have anything else.

Craig stared at him. “You know, I used to be the one giving people that advice. Makes it even worse now. I can hear everything I would’ve told myself.”

Tony laughed a little. “That’s a good thing.”

Craig pushed away from the mantle, lifted the Bible from the table, and sat at the far end of the couch.

Tony stood, and darkness replaced the spots. What was going on with him? Why couldn’t he beat this thing? He took a step and blinked. The black gave way to the blurry living room. “I’m going to get a few hours of sleep.”

Craig mumbled something.

Step by slow step, he dragged himself across the living room, up the stairs, and into his room. Legs shaking, he lowered himself onto the bed and lay back. Lord, give me enough strength to keep going. Help Craig. And help Merri. Get rid of her doubts.

Merri. She’d seemed like she’d agreed with what he’d said last night, but that didn’t mean the doubts wouldn’t return. No, they tended to come back at the worst possible times.
